‘You have watches, but we have time.’
In the West, time is measured, organised, bought and sold: it is something objective, separate from people, and often something we feel is lacking. In Africa, however, time is lived: it belongs to people, it is subjective, something to immerse oneself in and which is rarely lacking. The place where we are born inevitably shapes our relationship with time and, although it is not an immutable concept, it is difficult to shake off. Time can be experienced in many ways, even as a form of slavery, but it cannot be denied. This holds true for any region of the world. It is the power that allows us to dance, whatever our origin, gender or condition, to experience time itself in an absolute present.
Ertza was founded in 2004 under the direction of the dancer and choreographer Asier Zabaleta, with the aim of creating a new space in which to create freely through the interaction of various artistic disciplines alongside contemporary dance. Ertza’s works raise questions about human and social contradictions. They invite the audience, in a playful and aesthetic way, to take an active stance in response to what they are seeing and to reflect on issues of daily relevance.
